Sad

Recently I heard of the passing of a colleague.

Emergency Medical Services personnel are a special breed of people. These men and women are compassionate, knowledgeable, caring individuals required to be almost robotic during any number of horrific encounters or situations they find themselves in daily.

This particular member of the ‘service’ was all of these things and more. We only met after the worst of the patients’ encounter had been assessed, but still his caring continued. A warm smile/greeting as he pushed through the ER door, a blanket for an old lady, a helping hand, arm etc. from their stretcher to ours, doing some CPR for us in a critical situation and staying on a long transfer to make sure everyone was safe, only cover a few incidences.

You could tell by his actions that this was not just a job, but a life. A life filled with emergencies both positive and negative. He did this work so well.

I’m not at all privy to what happened to cause this loss but, I urge all those who are still caring, working and living this “emergency” life day in and day out, to take time for yourself away from the service.

The service of caring…..

Regenerate your batteries, seek help from others and take comfort from those who reach out. You may be surprised what you find.
