Snack

It seems that snacking has become a very hot past time since the pandemic has forced us to stay around home and indulge in our love of small plates and platters of delicious creations to have with a cold beer or glass of wine.

Present: lovely arrangements of cold meats , cheeses, fruits, nuts, olives, crackers and hors d’ouvres on a board or in a box.

Past: fondue, cheese balls, bowls of chips, pretzels or nuts with various dips that were very mayonnaise heavy and chip specific.

A favourite around here falls into the past category. I do love a good charcuterie board but at Christmas (which just happens to spill into football playoffs season) I get out the big turkey roaster and put together a batch of Bits and Bites mixture. It’s called a few different things…Nuts and Bolts, Snack mix, Chex Mix etc. and delivers a different combination and spice mixture depending on country, region and recipe.

I personally don’t like the store bought mix, not enough nuts! I also like the earthy addition of Worchestershire sauce in this recipe as it gives it a super flavour. The combinations are endless, the recipes are many, but the nostalgia and aroma of this in the lead up to Christmas is what it’s all about.

Change what cereal you add, choose twisty pretzels instead of sticks or put mixed nuts in if you wish, but, don’t use butter instead of margarine. The flavour will just not be the same!

Happy Snacking!
